How to Care for Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs

The establishment phase is critical

A newly planted tree or shrub spends its first months growing roots and adjusting. Good care during this period decides whether it thrives. Here’s how to help it settle in.

Water deeply and regularly

New plants need consistent moisture while their roots establish. Water deeply (so it reaches the root zone) rather than little and often, especially in the first season and through hot weather. Don’t let the root ball dry out — but avoid waterlogging too.

Mulch around the base

A layer of mulch around the plant (kept a few inches away from the trunk) retains moisture, keeps roots cool, and suppresses weeds that compete for nutrients. It’s one of the best things you can do for a new plant.

Hold off on heavy feeding

Don’t overload a new plant with fertiliser straight away — it’s focusing on roots. A little compost at planting is enough; feed gently once it shows new growth.

Protect from extremes

Shield young plants from harsh afternoon sun, strong wind, and frost (in colder areas) while they’re tender. A temporary shade or windbreak can help in the first weeks.

Stake tall saplings

If a sapling is tall or in a windy spot, stake it loosely so it stays upright while rooting — but allow some movement so the trunk strengthens. Remove the stake once established.

Keep the area weed-free

Weeds and grass right around the base compete for water and nutrients. Keep a clear, mulched circle around the plant while it establishes.

Be patient and watch

Some leaf drop after planting is normal. Watch for new growth as a sign it’s settling. With consistent care, it’ll establish and then need far less attention.
