How and When to Prune Trees and Shrubs

Why pruning matters

Proper pruning keeps trees and shrubs healthy, well-shaped, and flowering or fruiting well. Done right, it removes problems and encourages strong growth; done wrong or at the wrong time, it can harm the plant. Here’s how to get it right.

Start with the 3 Ds

Whatever the plant or season, always remove the Dead, Damaged, and Diseased wood first. This alone improves health and is often most of the job.

Use clean, sharp tools

Sharp, clean secateurs, loppers, or a pruning saw make clean cuts that heal fast. Disinfect blades between plants to avoid spreading disease.

Cut in the right place

Cut just above a healthy bud or branch junction, at a slight angle. Don’t leave long stubs, and don’t cut flush into the main trunk — respect the branch collar so the wound heals properly.

Prune at the right time

  • Flowering shrubs: usually prune just after they finish blooming, so you don’t cut off next season’s buds.
  • Trees & many shrubs: often best pruned in the dormant/cooler season when growth is slow.

Always check what suits your specific plant.

Don’t over-prune

Avoid removing too much at once — a good rule is no more than about a third of the plant in one go. Over-pruning stresses the plant and can trigger weak, excessive regrowth.

Shape for health and airflow

Thin out crowded, crossing, or inward-growing branches to open up the centre. Good airflow and light reduce disease — especially valuable in humid Indian conditions.

Clean up afterwards

Clear away prunings, particularly diseased material, so pests and disease don’t linger. Healthy trimmings can go to compost.
